Access to Activities

We provide our residents with a wide range of activities so that they can be active both physically and socially throughout their stay.

Activities include:

IT Room

The IT room is available for residents to play games, pick up and send emails, access legal support and some websites.  We run educational learning programmes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and European Driving Course for Computers (EDCC).  Residents who undertake these learning courses are awarded with a certificate upon successful completion.

Cultural Days

It is important to us to recognise and celebrate the many cultures and religions represented at Yarl’s Wood.  We celebrate Chinese New Year, Moon Festival, Eid, Divali, Sikh Gurus’ Birthdays, Christmas and Easter, to name a few and we hold special cultural days and Diversity Days where we recognise and celebrate our differences.

Sports Hall and Gymnasium

All new residents are given a tour of the sports hall and gymnasium, introduced to the health and safety requirements of these facilities and shown the correct use of all gym and sports equipment.

Our fully equipped sports hall is available a number of team sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton and five-a-side football. Our gymnasium is well equipped with running machines, a cross trainer, rowing machines, fixed and hand held weights and fitness balls.

Both the sports hall and gymnasium are monitored by our qualified instructor who offers support and instruction when required. We also run regular Yoga and Aerobic classes, offered by a qualified external professional.

Library

We have two libraries in Yarl’s Wood with books, DVDs, music CDs and audio books.  Our libraries are also fitted with additional computers where residents can access the same learning packages they may have used in the IT room.

Both libraries contain the legal paperwork and information that residents may need to allow them to conduct their legal cases with help and support.  A welfare officer conducts sessions with residents within both libraries, giving advice and support as needed.

Hair Salons

Our centre contains two hair salons managed by qualified hairdressers who offer a variety of salon treatments including cut and blow dry, hair colouring and extensions.

Residents can also book one of the salon’s qualified beauticians for beauty treatments such as manicures, nail varnish, nail design, eye lash extensions and Henna designs for celebrations.

Arts and Crafts

We are pleased to be able to offer our residents access to two arts and crafts areas within the centre.  Our arts and crafts tutor runs various activities including origami, sewing and machining, painting and drawing, clay sculpting, jewellery making and Henna design.

Cooking

We have two cultural kitchens within the centre, which provide an opportunity for the residents to cook cultural dishes together in an inviting and relaxing atmosphere.  The well-equipped kitchens also contain sofas, a DVD player and stereo as well as a dining area so that the residents can relax and enjoy each others company once the meal has been cooked. Each kitchen is available for up to six residents a day.
